Payne and Gottlieb explore the prime suspect’s alibi and other exculpatory evidence, as well as the lengths to which the FBI would go to get their man.
I must admit, this Adnan Syed case truly is one big HEADACHE. With hardly any physical evidence, what am I supposed to base my opinion on??? I’ve read many stories of crazy exes going as far as (almost) killing their lover, so I thought maybe this wasn’t s0 different. I would’ve never imagined that it would leave me ripping my hair out. The only thing that has been circulating in my mind is Koenig pleading, “He just doesn’t seem like a murderer”…
After thinking long and hard about Adnan, I’ve let Koenig win me over.
Listening to the first episode, I was 1000% sure that Syed was a complete psychopath. I was convinced he was some messed up kid who lived a double life as a perfect Muslim son at home while running around with Hae Min Lee. He was like the messier version of Hannah Montana. On top of that, Asia McClain presented a contradicting alibi and he had no memories of what he did after school that day. I thought, “How convenient for you to not remember. I CAN’T and WON’T believe you”.
Then, I listened to the final episode of the season.
Koenig gives so many new pieces of information that COMPLETELY throws me off. First, “The Nisha Call” on January 13 linked Adnan with the cell phone and Jay during that afternoon. However, the girl testified that the call happened in the evening at the video store where Jay worked. The big problem was that Jay started working at the END of January. Something wasn’t adding up, which was why Koenig wasn’t buying into this “evidence” at all. At this point, I was back on the fence.
Jay and his friend Jen drill EVEN MORE holes when they tell contradicting stories. Jay said he was at Jen’s house until 3:45 p.m. If he was, then why was he called Jen’s house at 3:21 p.m.??? They also couldn’t seem to remember when and where Jay was picked up, the Westview Mall (according to Jen) or Jay’s house (according to Jay). I was convinced by one contradiction against Syed in the first episode, but here I am with TWO contradictions supporting him and the episode isn’t even over!!!
Koenig also points out that DNA testing had linked a rapist/murderer by the name of Ronald Lee Moore to the death of Annalise Lee, who was strangled to death. Interestingly enough, he was accidentally freed on January 1, 1999. As opposed to a scrawny 17-year-old who had never been in trouble with the law, what made more sense? Does Adnan even look physically qualified to do such a thing…?
It’s pretty clear what Koenig’s trying to point out. “I don’t believe any of us can say what really happened to Hae”. She’s right. It wasn’t what we thought we knew, but what we knew. Ultimately, there’s no evidence that proves Adnan is the actual killer. What we knew wasn’t enough to throw a kid in jail for half of his life. At this point, I decided that Adnan seemed more innocent than guilty. I should also point out that Koenig kept dropping these hints with her pitiful voice and depressing music when Adnan sounded like he was on the verge of tears.
Imagine being accused of murder but having next to no support to prove otherwise. The universe must really hate this poor guy. The coincidences, the blank memories… nothing worked in his favour. To anyone reading this, I want to think about this: If he’s truly guilty, would he let Koenig spend more than a year digging so deep into this case?
Good luck has finally hit Syed as he was recently awarded a new trial. Click here to learn more about the evidence which could be used against him a second time.
